One of the most challenging aspects of being a leader is continuously motivating your team while, at the same time, reducing employee turnover. It might seem like an impossible task, but it is achievable, simply by appreciating what they do and thanking them for it, according to the site "Inc."

According to Gallup's 2016 analysis, employees typically feel they are not getting appreciation, and only 1 in 3 employees feel they were appreciated for their work in the previous week. Gallup discovered that those who do not feel appreciated are twice as likely to leave their jobs in the next year.

The American research and studies center, Gallup, issued a detailed report on the importance of appreciation:

  • Employees become more committed.
  • They feel loyalty and belonging.
  • They share their positive experiences.
  • They do not think about leaving.

If you, as a leader or manager, face difficulty finding ways to appreciate your employees, here I present to you 4 of the most common forms of appreciation in major organizations that are keen on promoting a culture of appreciation.

Daily Appreciation:

Usually low-cost but leaves a deep impact, such as:

  • Handwritten notes
  • Bringing lunch during work
  • Verbal thanks
  • Thank-you certificates

Exceptional Appreciation:

The employee is formally appreciated by the top of the hierarchy due to an achievement with clear impact and contribution to the organization's vision, for example:

  • Presenting ideas that serve the organization's strategy
  • Turning paper plans into tangible reality
  • Providing exceptional service to customers

Professional / Career Appreciation:

Considered one of the most impactful types of appreciation on employee engagement and loyalty to the organization. Its forms include:

  • Celebrating the employee's anniversary of joining
  • Celebrating the employee's personal occasions

Collective Appreciation:

The organization's achievement is considered an achievement for the employees, so the employee should be appreciated for this achievement, for example:

  • Closing a profitable deal
  • Launching a new product
  • Achieving an external victory/recognition
  • An increase in the organization's market value
  • Completing acquisition procedures
